Vacancy: Research and Development Scientist

R&D Scientist - Point of Care Immunoassay Development

The Company:

AgPlus Diagnostics is based at Colworth Science Park in Sharnbrook, Bedfordshire. The AgPlus technology was initially developed at the National Physical Laboratory and was spun out in October 2011. The focus of the development programme at AgPlus is to deliver a rapid diagnostic platform technology that would deliver a real difference to how test results can be used when obtained outside of the laboratory environment. AgPlus has been developing our primary assay technology and reader system set against key development criteria including:

  • Rapid, fully quantitative assay results
  • Highly sensitive, comparable to laboratory analysers
  • Cost effective diagnostic system
  • Portable, handheld system
  • Flexible system which can handle multiple sample types
  • Communications enable to allow for integration into existing information systems

The Ag+ microfluidic chip and reader system developed, allows for its use across a variety of applications including human, veterinary and environmental diagnostic testing.

The Role:

To act as a scientist within a project team (or multiple teams) to carry out the development of novel assays, systems and processes within AgPlus.

This is bench-based role suitable for a conscientious and talented scientist with opportunities to learn and develop project and team management skills. This role may also include interactions with clients, customers and collaborators. As such, the candidate is required to be comfortable building relationships inside and outside the organisation and engaging with others from all areas of the business whilst maintaining focus on the customer’s needs and requirements.

Personal Profile:

This role would suit a candidate who is organised and ambitious but equally capable of sharing their knowledge and wishing to gain further experience in new techniques and applications. They should thrive on challenges and be keen to take on new things and gain huge satisfaction from completing things and pride from their endeavours. The ideal candidate will be someone who is capable of working in a structured manner whilst also capable of solving problems by thinking beyond the obvious. The candidate should also be commercially aware, conscious of working to time and financial targets and also willing to work with the company’s clients as well as their own R&D and technical personnel.

AgPlus is a small, rapidly developing diagnostic company. Therefore this role would particularly suit an individual with the ability to work effectively and calmly under pressure who wants to be a key part of a growing company.

Relevant Experience:

The ideal candidate will have a suitable scientific qualification (BSc or equivalent) and preferably have worked for at least one to two years in a commercial organisation developing immunoassay based tests. Experience in multiple immunoassay formats would be ideal, especially using electrochemical systems, but equally useful are lateral flow and EIA formats.
